STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Application Number: 1999-0924
Property Location: JEFFERSON ROAD (PLEASANT VALLEY CEM.)
Property Owner: PENN TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE
Landmark or District Designation: LL
Rating: S Key Number: 14-1044-0782
Survey Number:
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
The Pleasant Valley Cemetery is one of fifteen remaining nineteenth-century pioneer
burial sites in St. Joseph County. This cemetery is located on land that was once a farm owned
by John Ireland in the 1820's. In August of 1839, then owner, John A. Ervin donated three
quarters of an acre of land to the St. Joseph County Commissioners for a public burial place.
Previously that same donated parcel had been a private burial ground. In 1863 the cemetery
was enlarged by deeding an acre of adjoining ground from Malina and Chauncey Curtis to
David Pettit to be held in trust for a public burying ground. Pleasant Valley Cemetery is the
final resting place for original owner, William Ireland who was also responsible for building the
first saw mill in Osceola. Also buried there are six Civil War soldiers, William Bell, George
Dissinger, Jacob Dielman, Phillip Dielman, Isaac Pettit and Orrin Crain.
