St. Joseph County
Emergency Management Agency
Director, Jeanne Mahoney
Deputy Director: Cheryl Qzucailts
July 12, 1949
4714 Lathrop St.
South Bend, IN 46628
I Phone; ?35-9234 Fax, 235-9779
Historic Preservation Commission "
Of South Bend & St. Joseph County
County/City Bldg.
South Bend, TN 46601
Attn; J, Edward Talley
MW Tallev:
I am sending this letter along with our completed application for certificate of appropriateness for installing
an outdoor warning siren on historically designated property I hope that letter will address any questions
that the commission n;ayhave, I
The siren in question is part of s, cotltttywide outdoor warning system. This system will warn the citizens
of a tornado in St. Joseph County. We will test the sirens twice monthly with one test (first Thursday of the
month at 11:30 AM) being a full audible test. The second test (third Thursday of the month) will be a silent
test. The siren is a rotating siren that is installed on a 60' concrete pate that is set 15' into the groundl The
concrete pole was used instead of wood to prevent future maintenance problems. Wood poles will twist
over time and pull the wires array front the unit and cause malfunction. The poles and the sired unit are a
pleasing calor (beige).
'Due to St. Joseph County's susceptibility to the devastating effects of tornadoes -this system is essential for
the safety of the citizens of St. Joseph County.
The project is expected to be installed by the end ofNovember 1999. At that point, the old system will be
torn down and will be disposed ter". t have requested Treats Tech (demolition contractor) to save one of the
old sirens for display in tete Studebaker historical museum. 1 have enclosed a copy of my correspondence
on this issue.
Your favorable consideration of this matter will be greatly appreciated,
Sincerely,
.J'eanne Mahoney, Director
St. Joseph County
Emergency lylanagement Agencv
i
Cc; Cole Assoc.
County Commissioners
File
f -n r^x r*.:.t+f* r.r+a. - r,,": P01 ICF *,Tr) >aESGI IF* t711 WEATHER
