October 15, 1998
Mr. David Duvall
Historic Preservation Commission
1100 County -City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Mr. Duvall:
Gov. Frank O'Bannon has created the "Hoosier Millenium Task Force" to plan for and celebrate the
Year 2000. The Task Force is led by First Lady Judy O'Bannon; who will visit the Century Center (at
the St. Joseph St. entrance) on Wednesday, October 21, 1998 at 1:25 p.m. I invite you to attend
Mrs. O'Bannon's brief remarks and her presentation of a "Millenium Toolbox' to Mayor Steve Luecke.
This event will take place right after the Disability Awareness Luncheon, also at the Century Center.
A Local Millenium Task Force is being formed, and I also invite you (or another person you designate)
to join this group. The Local Task Force will be broad-based, and will include education, business,
social service, religious, health care, municipal services, and elected officials. Mayor Luecke will be the
ex officio chair, and a small steering group will be formed to guide planning, publicity, and coordination.
South Bend's planning for Hoosier Millenium activities should be guided by four important questions:
What is our past?
Who are we today?
• What do we want to be in the future?
. _ How do we make that vision a reality?
We expect that most Millenium activities in South Bend will be created by organizations like yours, and
will take place during 1999 and 2000. The celebrations will culminate in two.events: dedication of our
local Millenium time capsule on July 4, 2000, and a "Hoosier Millenium Grand Gala" in December 2000.
Your participation is essential to the success of our effort. Please begin by joining Mrs. O'Bannon and
Mayor Luecke at the Century Center's St. Joseph Street entrance next Wednesday, October 21 St
at 1:25 p.m. Please return the enclosed card to indicate your desire to join the Local Task Force, and
call me at 280-7090 if you have questions or would like more information on the Hoosier Millenium.
Sincerely,
David L. Hay
Local Millenium Task Force Coordinator
and
Research & Development Coordinator
South Bend Heritage Foundation
Enclosure' .
