CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
RECOMMENDATION
The applicant is proposing to remove an existing wood shingled roof and replace it with a
lower cost asphalt, simulation of wood. The guidelines state that unique roofing material
should be maintained when possible and when not possible that it be replaced with a material
that resembles the original as closely as possible. The staff has had difficulty in formulating a
recommendation for this application do to the fact that the house is fairly new and is a non-
contributing structure with in the historic district. There are many items to consider with this
application, such as, the expense of wood shingles and the fact that asphalt shingles were
available at the time of construction. However, the staff is restricted to interpreting the
guidelines and thus has to recommend denial on the basis that asphalt shingles do not closely
resemble wood shingles. The staff would also like to make the recommendation that the
application be placed in to the Standards and Maintenance Committee for further review of the
proposed asphalt product and any other products that might be more suitable.
10/1/98
