OWNED —Eugene T..Bamber DESIGNATION — LHD-EW RATING — Non -Contributing STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT Ted R. and Hope K. Evans built this house in 1963. Mr. Evans was the vice president of the central group for Associates Investment Company, eventually being promoted to president. They resided at this address until 1975 when the house was sold to Dr. John and Elaine Rubush. Dr. Rubush was a physician with offices at 919 E. Jefferson. Dr. & Mrs. Rubush lived in this house until 1981 when they sold it to G. Burt Ford. Mr. Ford sold the house two months later to the current owner, Eugene Bamber. PROPOSED CHANGE Applicant is proposing to remove the existing wood shingle roof over this house and replace it with a look a like, architectural asphalt shingle. STANDARDS The Preservation Guidelines for East Wayne Street Historic District state: b) ....The Guidelines for the East Wayne Street District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... II. Existing Structures B. Roofs & Roofing II.B.1. Required The existing shape and materials of the roof shall be retained. II.B.2. Recommended Whenever possible, the original shape and materials of the roof should be restored. Particular effort should be made to retain materials such as slate, tile, and other unique materials not commonly found in new construction. Roof covering which is deteriorated beyond repair should be replaced with new material that matches as closely as possible the original in composition, size, shape, color, and texture. II.B.3. Prohibited Nothing shall be done to change the essential character of the roof as viewed from the thoroughfare by adding architectural features ... or by using roofing materials inappropriate to the style of the house.
