Wayne <br />South Bend, IN. <br />OWNED —Eugene T..Bamber <br />DESIGNATION — LHD-EW <br />RATING — Non -Contributing <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Ted R. and Hope K. Evans built this house in 1963. Mr. Evans was the vice president of the <br />central group for Associates Investment Company, eventually being promoted to president. <br />They resided at this address until 1975 when the house was sold to Dr. John and Elaine <br />Rubush. Dr. Rubush was a physician with offices at 919 E. Jefferson. Dr. & Mrs. Rubush <br />lived in this house until 1981 when they sold it to G. Burt Ford. Mr. Ford sold the house two <br />months later to the current owner, Eugene Bamber. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant is proposing to remove the existing wood shingle roof over this house and replace it <br />with a look a like, architectural asphalt shingle. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for East Wayne Street Historic District state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the East Wayne Street District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />II. Existing Structures <br />B. Roofs & Roofing <br />II.B.1. Required <br />The existing shape and materials of the roof shall be retained. <br />II.B.2. Recommended <br />Whenever possible, the original shape and materials of the roof should be restored. Particular <br />effort should be made to retain materials such as slate, tile, and other unique materials not <br />commonly found in new construction. Roof covering which is deteriorated beyond repair <br />should be replaced with new material that matches as closely as possible the original in <br />composition, size, shape, color, and texture. <br />II.B.3. Prohibited <br />Nothing shall be done to change the essential character of the roof as viewed from the <br />thoroughfare by adding architectural features ... or by using roofing materials inappropriate to <br />the style of the house. <br />
