CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />,APPLICATION —1998-1105-2 <br />PROPERTY — 552 River Avenue <br />South Bend, IN. <br />OWNER — Greg & Lisa Cronkright <br />DESIGNATION — LHD-EP <br />RATING — Contributing C/10 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This house was built in 1922 for Clarence E. & Edyth Folger. Mr. Folger was the president and <br />manager of the Folger Barlick Company, a whole sale and retail window shades and awnings <br />store. His wife, Edyth, was the companies secretary. Mr. & Mrs. Folger resided there until <br />1926 when they sold the house to Mary Misher, a stenographer at Studebaker Brothers. She <br />only owned the house for two years, selling it to John & Mary Newman in 1928. Mr. Newman <br />resided there until his death in 1954, his wife, Mary, continued to live there until 1969. The <br />Newman family continued to own the house until 1977 when it was sold to Leon and Lahna <br />Richardson. They resided at this address until 1979 when it was sold to Kenneth Deboer. Mr. <br />Deboer owned the house until 1998 when he sold it to the current owners, Greg and Lisa <br />Cronkright. <br />J'ROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant is proposing to replace the existing wood storm door on the side entrance of the <br />house with a weather resistant and energy efficient aluminum cladded wood storm door. The <br />old door has eight window divisions in a two tier pattern. The new proposed door has an <br />aluminum exterior with twelve window divisions in a three tier pattern. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for Edgewater Place Historic District state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the Edgewater Place District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />historical integrity shall be retained. <br />II. Existing Structures <br />II.C.1. Required <br />Existing or original windows and doors, including sash, lintels, sills, shutters, decorative <br />glass ... shall be retained, or when deteriorated beyond repair, replaced with duplicates of the <br />existing or original. <br />
