Re: Application for Certificate of Appropriateness
File No. 58201
Dear Commission:
Attached is the Application for Certificate of Appropriateness for improvements to the
North Pumping Station located at 830 N. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. The project
includes the addition of chemical feed equipment, filter vessels, pumps, piping, HVAC
systems and electrical systems to the existing facility. Also included is the renovation of
office space to the south wing of the facility to house the water works staff, various field
piping modifications /additions, and a new overflow structure. These improvements are
addressed in detail in the following paragraphs:
1. Improvements to the interior of the North Pumping Station will require the
addition of intakes /exhausts tot dehumidification, ventilation, heating and cooling
systems. Attached on plan sheet A5 is an elevation of the east face of the facility.
All HVAC systems, where penetrations to the exterior (louvers) are required,
were kept to the rear (east face) of the facility (low visibility). Per our
conversions and meetings with the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) we
have kept the louvers. high, in the arches of the window. Therefore, if the
windows are replaced in the future the louvers will not be in the way in the lower
sections of the windows. No changes were made to the to the exterior of the
north, south or west face of the facility, due to the high visibility from Michigan
St. to these exteriors.
The existing trolley system on the east face is not original to the Station. It was
added in recent years for the loading and unloading of chlorine ton cylinders. The
existing trolley system is an eyesore and will be removed, refer to the attached
