Preservation Commission of July 14, 1998
South Bend & St. Joseph County
Mr. Dave Duvall
photograph. A new retractable trolley system is proposed to be installed Historic
at the same location. The new trolley will be visible only when chlorine is
delivered to the facility (the trolley system will be retracted within the chlorine
room when not in use).
Electrical conduit is currently attached to the exterior east face of the facility in
various locations. The conduit will be removed and the electrical service fed
underground to the station.
2. In order to assure against flooding of the entire facility, an emergency overflow
from the backwash tank, located in the lower level of the facility, to the facility's
exterior is needed. The location of an overflow structure /pipe from the facility's
backwash tank to the exterior of the facility is currently under evaluation. There
are two possible locations for the overflow line from the facility.
The first possible location for the overflow is on the east wall of the station as
shown on plan sheets A5 & P10. An 18" flapper check valve would be installed
on the .east wall. The invert of the valve would be 12" above the ground
elevation, per "Ten States Standards ". Under emergency conditions the valves
would open and overflow from this point into the parking lot.
The second possible location for the overflow is to bury a line from the backwash
tank to the river. An overflow structure would be constructed in Leeper Park near
the river. The structure would consist of a concrete spillway /pad down the slope
of the embankment to the river to prevent erosion.
3. An overflow structure from the reservoir to the river is shown on plan sheet P1.
The current overflow for the reservoir is located in the river (submerged). The
Indiana Department of Environmental Management does not allow an overflow to
be submerged. The overflow must have a minimum of a 12" air break. Therefore
the existing overflow must be relocated, refer to plan sheet Cl for proposed
location of overflow.
4. Field piping modifications will require temporary excavation within Leeper Park.
The areas to be excavated for the installation of piping and conduit (electrical to
wells) includes the following locations:
a. North of North Station: Installation of finished water piping, from north
face of station to approximately 35 feet north of station, refer to plan sheet
C3. Majority of excavation will be in the existing driveway. Excavation
will require the removal of various plantings north of the drive. Plantings
NA
