Michigan.. <br />-- -, South •Bend, IN - - - - <br />OWNER -- South Bend - Water Works <br />DESIGNATION -- LL <br />RATING -- 'Outstanding 0/13 ` <br />STATEMENT /HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />The-plans for the North Pumping Station were drawn up on August <br />1912, by the well known local architects, Freyermuth and Maurer. This firm <br />preserved -an earlier foundation on the northwest side of the present structure <br />which 'dates to_1892. Work on the new building began in 1910 when a local <br />engineer, William S. had built a,6,000.,000 gallon reinforced concrete <br />,.reservoir. Freyermuth and Maurer's 1912 building:was.constructed for the_cast <br />of $250,000.00 and was equipped with a 7 "x 175' reinforced concrete stack, a <br />brick suction well,, 20 additional supply wells and steam pumping engines. The ' - <br />suction-well was subsequently replaced by a modern - reservoir and the steam <br />pumps -were replaced by electricity, thus, leaving most of the pumping station <br />empty. ; <br />The exterior of the new pumping station is in the classical revival style, <br />which was very popular in the mid -west as the Prairie School Style began to <br />fade, to male i.t better suit its park surroundings.'Currently_ the interior is' <br />divided into three parts, the old •pumping-room the new pumping roof and the <br />boiler room. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant proposes to first add chemical feed equipment, filter vessels, <br />pumps, piping, HVAC systems and electrical'-systems the existing facility. <br />Second, they propose to renovate the office space to the south wing of the <br />facility to house the water works,staff, various field piping <br />modifications /additions, and new overflow structure. Thirdly, the applicant <br />is proposing.to resurface the existing driveways and rehabilitate the parking <br />facilities. The Guidelines for Local Landmarks follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />C. Renovation and <br />C.1. Structure <br />Necessary structural improvements, where safety demands should be accomplished <br />in such a way,as,to cause minimal' visual change to the original style and' <br />'construction.' ` <br />C:2. Construction and Style- <br />All work should be in the architectural style and in a technique <br />compatible with that'of the original' that alters, removes, - <br />or. covers existing significant'stylistic detail shall not,be permitted. A <br />change which adds detail of another style'will not be-permitted. <br />
