LUECKE, MAYOR
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
LEWIS N. POWELL
DIRECTOR
August 11, 1998
Mr. David Duvall, Director
Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and Saint Joseph County
Room 1123, County -City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Re: Application for Certificate of Appropriateness
East Wayne Street Lighting
Dear Dave,
Thanks for the opportunity to add some information to the application. I will attend the
August 17 Commission meeting in the hope that the Commission can make a favorable decision at
that meeting.
Attached are catalog cuts for the fixture; HWJ -33 -A, from the Herwig line; the concrete pole
for general use, DB700x13 from Traditional Concrete; and BP20 from Shakespeare, a fiberglass pole
for use on Jefferson Boulevard. We propose to replace all fixtures and posts, as well as all the
underground wiring. The new posts will placed in the same position as the existing posts, except
that no post will be closer to the curb than two feet and no closer to a driveway than three feet. Four
"service points" will be established. Their locations are shown on the drawing.
Sixty (60) posts and fixtures will be changed altogether. Six (6) on Jefferson Boulevard
between Eddy Street and Sunnyside Avenue will be placed on twenty feet (20') high black
(Shakespeare) fiberglass poles. The remainder will be on thirteen feet(13') high gray (Traditional)
concrete poles. The lighting source will be one hundred watt, 9500 lumen high pressure sodium.
The lighting system will be owned, operated, and maintained by the City of South Bend. The
existing system will be transferred to the City from American Electric Power Company. Some of
the sixty lights are outside the preservation district boundary. However, they are connected to wiring
circuits that serve the district in their greater part. The power company requires the City to install
a meter base, disconnect switch, and control system for this lighting.
Continued
4 ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES EQUIPMENT SERVICES
ARL LITTRELL, P.E.
