crumlish and crumlish
architects, Inc.
September 2, 1997
Historic Preservation Commission of St. Joseph County
County -City Building
South Bend, IN
RE Replacement of Cement -Asbestos Roof Shingles at 1055 Riverside Dr.,
South Bend
The existing cement -asbestos roof tiles are in a serious state of disrepair
and need to be replaced. In our opinion the original roof tiles have out-
lived their expected usefulness. There are now leaks in several places of the
roof.
The home dates from 1930 and although the cement -asbestos
-asbestos tiles are probably
the original roof shingles, no current substitute exists on the market to
match these tiles. We have reviewed several options, including slate and a
slate -like cement -asbestos tile, but both appeared too heavily textured to
mimic the original tiles. The selected replacement is the Certainteed "Grand
Manor Shangle" that is a high-profile, laminated asphalt -fiberglass shingle.
Its pattern and size appear closest to the original tiles. We believe the
original tiles were red, to red -brown in color, but have now faded to a dull
brown. We propose to install the Certainteed color "Georgian Brick" a red -
brown color.
We propose to replace the entire roofing system, including all flashings,
valley flashings and counterf lashings. Currently the flashings are copper.
We proposed to replace them in-kind with new copper. We also propose to have
the wood lx6 fasciae of the upper dormers wrapped in lead -coated copper (dark
gray -brown) to eliminate the need to paint them in the future. We will not
alter any of the roof lines of the existing roof and dormers.
The existing hip shingles are a barrel -type tile. There are no similar hip
singles available in the Certainteed asphalt -fiberglass line. we propose to
install Certainteed's standard high-profile hip shingles, in the same color as
the field shingles.
At this time we are also proposing to tuck -point the main chimney of the
house. A few bricks have fallen and will be replaced with new brick of the
same color. The mortar will be tinted to match the existing mortar (dark-
gray) -
All work debris will be disposed of legally by licensed asbestos handlers.
We believe the new roof will be harmonious to the existing home and not
detract from the historic character of the home or the neighborhood.
Sincerely,
,cBrendan CruAmli4shX,NCARB
Architect
0 5 attachments
3215 sugar maple court, suite 4 south bend, Indiana 46628
