CERTTFTCATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
• history and development shall be retained.
2. Recommended
Plants and trees in close proximity to the building that are causing
deterioration to the buildings historic fabric should be removed. However,
trees and plant material that must be removed should be immediately replaced
by suitable flora.
3. Prohibited
No changes may be made to the appearance of the site by removing major
landscaping items, trees, fencing..... before evaluating their importance to
the property's history and development.
RECOMMENDATION
The owner proposes to first construct a sign over the rear door of the house,
replacing the "Entrance" sign that is currently there. The proposed sign will
be made of handcarved oak that is 24" by 12" in size and which will resemble
the already existing signs that are present in the front of the house. The
owners have chosen a sign that compliments the house in color and design,
which the present sign does not, thus, the Staff recommends .approval of the
new sign. The owners second proposal is to replace copper valleys over the
rear sunporch, alongside the north side's smaller chimney. The replacement of
this flashing may be approved by Staff. The owners' last proposal is to remove
an ornamental pear tree which is crowding another tree near the driveway and
plant an older pear tree just outside the apartment door. Being that the tree
• to be removed was planted in 1990 and is not part of the history of the house
and that the planting of the new tree nearer the apartment does not pose a
threat to the building, nor does it hide the architectural features of the
house the Staff recommends approval of the removal of the imposing tree and
the planting of the.new tree.
DBD
10/3/97
•
