North Shore Drive <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Dr. Greg & Allison Credi <br />DESIGNATION -- LHD-WNS <br />RATING -- Significant S/12 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Samuel R. & Mary Dunnuck contracted the South Bend architectural firm of <br />Austin & Schambleau to design the French Chateau style house which they built <br />in 1925. Samuel Dunnuck was born in Ohio in 1851. After he graduated from <br />South Bend College of Commerce in 1904 he got a job as a bookkeeper for G.E. <br />Meyer & Son, a company which dealt with hardware and building supplies. Four <br />years later he married the bosses granddaughter, Mary Johanna Meyer. In 1915, <br />Mr. Dunnuck received his first promotion to the position of general manager. <br />His second promotion came in the year 1935 when he became president. Mr. <br />Dunnuck and his wife lived in the house until 1942 when they sold it to their <br />son John, who resided in the house until 1960. John Dunnuck sold the house to <br />Dr. John F. Helmer in 1960. Mr. Helmer lived their until his death in 1988. <br />The current owners, Mr. & Mrs. Credi purchased the house in 1995. <br />. PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant proposes to enclose the porch, that is located next to the driveway, <br />by iAstal.ling casement windows and doors in the existing masonry openings. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for West North Shore Historic District state: <br />b) .... The Guidelines for the West North Shore Historic District follow the <br />Rehabilitation Mode -1.... <br />D.4. Porches and Steps which are readily visible from the street. <br />Preferred: <br />Retain and maintain porches and steps including handrails..... If porches <br />and/or steps are enclosed for heat conservation or other reasons, it should be <br />done in a manner that does not destroy the architectural nor historical <br />character of the home. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The owners are proposing to enclose a porch with casement windows and doors. <br />The applicants are not proposing to remove the existing porch or altar its <br />construction or design, so the porch will be able to be easily reverted back <br />to open space again if so desired. The windows and the doors the applicant <br />has chosen replicate the muntin designs throughout the rest of the house, <br />thus, continuing the houses architectural theme through the new enel.osur.e. <br />Being that the owners are not damaging or destroying the architectural <br />integrity of the porch and that their choice of. windows and doors fit- the <br />character of the home the Staff recommends approval of the enclosure of the <br />porch as presented. <br />• <br />DBD <br />10/10/97 <br />
