CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT • APPLICATION -- 1997-1001 PROPERTY -- 315 W. North Shore Drive South Bend, IN OWNER -- Dr. Greg & Allison Credi DESIGNATION -- LHD-WNS RATING -- Significant S/12 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT Samuel R. & Mary Dunnuck contracted the South Bend architectural firm of Austin & Schambleau to design the French Chateau style house which they built in 1925. Samuel Dunnuck was born in Ohio in 1851. After he graduated from South Bend College of Commerce in 1904 he got a job as a bookkeeper for G.E. Meyer & Son, a company which dealt with hardware and building supplies. Four years later he married the bosses granddaughter, Mary Johanna Meyer. In 1915, Mr. Dunnuck received his first promotion to the position of general manager. His second promotion came in the year 1935 when he became president. Mr. Dunnuck and his wife lived in the house until 1942 when they sold it to their son John, who resided in the house until 1960. John Dunnuck sold the house to Dr. John F. Helmer in 1960. Mr. Helmer lived their until his death in 1988. The current owners, Mr. & Mrs. Credi purchased the house in 1995. . PROPOSED CHANGE Applicant proposes to enclose the porch, that is located next to the driveway, by iAstal.ling casement windows and doors in the existing masonry openings. STANDARDS The Preservation Guidelines for West North Shore Historic District state: b) .... The Guidelines for the West North Shore Historic District follow the Rehabilitation Mode -1.... D.4. Porches and Steps which are readily visible from the street. Preferred: Retain and maintain porches and steps including handrails..... If porches and/or steps are enclosed for heat conservation or other reasons, it should be done in a manner that does not destroy the architectural nor historical character of the home. RECOMMENDATION The owners are proposing to enclose a porch with casement windows and doors. The applicants are not proposing to remove the existing porch or altar its construction or design, so the porch will be able to be easily reverted back to open space again if so desired. The windows and the doors the applicant has chosen replicate the muntin designs throughout the rest of the house, thus, continuing the houses architectural theme through the new enel.osur.e. Being that the owners are not damaging or destroying the architectural integrity of the porch and that their choice of. windows and doors fit- the character of the home the Staff recommends approval of the enclosure of the porch as presented. • DBD 10/10/97
