• of the building. There was more discussion over the possibility of the
property reverting back to Engmans heirs.
C. National Register Nominations
Mr. Oxian asked how soon the nominations for the East Bank Multiple Property
listing and Leeper Park had to be in. Mr. Duvall stated that there were no
drop dead dates .on the nominations. He further stated that the action taken
at the meeting would be transmitted to.the State Historic Preservation Office
and that they would act on them when they receive them. Mr. Duvall went on to
mention that the grant has been completed and closed out and that the State
Office already has a copy of the nominations. Mr. Oxian stated that the
Commission was giving a contract to do a plan on Leeper Park, but, he wandered
how much of this nomination would affect that plan. Mr. Duvall responded that
there was some urgency for the Leeper Park listing with regard to the planning
document for the park. He stated that in order to get the grant for a plan
the property must be listed on or soon to be listed on the National
Register. Mr. Talley moved to suspend the reading of the Leeper Park
Nomination and for the passage of the nomination. Mrs. Sporleder seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Oxian opened the floor up for
discussion on the East Bank Multiple Property Listings and suggested that it
be tabled to allow more time for the members to read it. Mr. Duvall noted
that the Hoban family, who are the owners of the house at the corner of St.
Louis' and Colfax, was present. He mentioned to the Hobans that the
Certificates of Appropriateness applications that they have witnessed pertain
only to local historic districts and not national register districts. Mr.
Talley further noted that in national register districts there are no local
• rules or regulations on the structures. Mr. Oxian asked if another one of the
visitors, Mr. Costello, had a question. Mr. Costello stated that he wanted
some more information on what it means to be in'a national register, more
specifically, how would it affect his property at 120 N. Notre Dame Avenue -and
the rest of the neighborhood. Mr. Oxian responded that. he could get all the
information he wants from Mr. Duvall.
Mr. Duvall stated that he had received two letters of objection, one letter
was from the Sisters of the Holy Cross regarding the house at 1104 North Notre
Dame Avenue which they maintain.as a convent. Since the house in question is
an individually listed property the .Siste'rsobjection is sufficient to take
the property of} the nomination along with their religious. affiliation. The
second letter was from Jack Roberts of Madison Hospital, however, upon further
correspondence with him he has withdrawn his objection.
Mr. Hoban asked to have more information on .the nomination, specifically his
individual listing. He further stated that some of the information on his
house that the Commission has is inaccurate and he wants to make sure that the
nomination is accurate. Mr. Oxian suggested that Mr. Hoban get together with
Mr. Duvall to clear up any misinformation. Mr. Talley asked if the family had
any photographs of their grandfather that the Commission could get copies of.
Mr. Talley moved to table the East Bank Multiple Property Listing until
Novembers meeting to allow more time for reading. Mrs. Sporleder seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously: Mr. Duvall explained how the
notification of owners worked when a national register nomination was
approved. Mrs. Choitz asked if the property owners would receive anything,
such as the houses history or a plaque, when they are placed on the national
register. Mr. Duvall said. that the owners are only sent a letter of
• notification and that if the owner wished to have a plaque made they may,
however, the owner would have to pay -for it.
IV.
