CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
are both necessary and a fete -accompli.
. Details not indicated in the photographs include railings which will be
required at the handicapped ramp, basement stair, and at the front porch. The
railings at the ramp are proposed to extend the detail features at the rear
deck which, though more visible from the street, are consistent with other
approved features associated with this project at the rear of the building and
at the adjacent property to the west. The railings which will be required at
the front porch and the stairwell will be more apparent from the street and
should therefore be of a design more compatible with the historic
architecture. These railing locations are necessary for life safety to prevent
accidental fall into the stairwell. The protection at driveway along the side
of the stairwell may be best be accomplished with masonry reflecting the
character of the foundation.
These details may be better defined by the date of the Public Hearing. Staff
recommends approval so long as these considerations are addressed.
DBD
11/7/97
•
0
