South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - December 20, 1996
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
e. continued....
Independent Living Center" located on the
corner of Wayne and Lafayette Street. This
is a transition program for rehab patients
who are not in the hospital.
The two rehab facilities treat spinal cord
and brain injury patients. Their primary
objective is getting the patients back into
the activities of everyday living. The
patients receive lessons for every day living,
such as learning to cook, to feed
themselves, and basically they learn to take
care of themselves. For the patients, this is
a transition back into the community.
He stated that the sensible thing to do was
to incorporate all these facilities into one
common facility, where they could share
common services.
He stated that Memorial Health System,
Inc. searched the South Bend area for the
appropriate place to construct their facility.
They found the Transpo lot to be the
appropriate location for their facility. One
of their requirements was to stay in the
South Bend downtown area, which is close
to many of the services, programs and staff
that would serve these facilities.
He stated that the proposed facility itself is
a four -story building. The first floor will
have all the therapeutic facilities; primarily,
the Orthopedic Sports and Medicine facility
and the Independent Living Center. This
area requires a number of machines and
equipment that will be used by individuals
H:\ HOME \CPHIPPS \WPDATA \COMMSN\122096.MIN -8-
