CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
• III.B.1 - Required
Materials used on an addition to an existing structure shall relate to
the existing or original materials of the structure. Also, as much of the.
original structure as possible shall be retained so that the addition could be
removed without damage to the basic structure and appearance of the building.
RECOMMENDATION
The proposed second story addition meets all requirements of the guidelines
with regard to the compatibility of design elements and materials with the
possible exception of the prohibition against altering the essential character
of the roof (II.B.3). In this case the large expanse of roof typical of the
ranch style will no longer remain. However, the east rake of the existing roof
is being retained which implies the continuity of this surfa.ce. Also, as noted
a
above the house shares equal characteristic of a Cape -Cod for which dormer
would be stylistically appropriate. Furthermore, the applicant has submitted
photographs of other existing structures in the district which have similar
massing of roof dormers at -the front elevation which demonstrate this to be a
common characteristic of the district.
Staff recommends approval of this application.with the suggestion that the
dove -cote be repeated at the new upper gable.
DBD
10/8/96
0
