It
• HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This building was originally locate at the southwest alley corner between
Main and Lafayette Streets on LaSalle (then Water) Street on property which
was sold by Albert Kelley and his wife to his own company, the South Bend
Remedy Company. The building permit for this structure was purchased by the
South Bend Remedy Company on April 16, 1895. The building from its inception
was a business property with virtually no setback from the street and its
corner turret overhanging the street. It was utilized for this business until
1928, being operated by Albert's son Richard after his death in 1924. After
this time the property was utilized as business office for the Democratic
Party, the engineering firm of Chas. Cole & Son, and the American Cancer
Society. Other subsequent uses included apartments and warehouse storage.
The building was moved to its present site by Tim Lykowski in 1988 to avert
immanent demolition threatened by expansion of the South Bend Tribune. In its
new location on Colfax, it has been placed on the lot to conform to the
dominant setback on this originally residential block.
NOTES
1) Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory - survey data card
2) City of South Bend, building permit records
DBD
5/14/96
•
