• STAFF REPORT
PROPOSED LOCAL LANDMARK
130 Park Lane
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This house was designed by Callis Miller and built for Arthur L. May and his
wife, Elba in 1929. Mr. May was an attorney with Craybill, Crumpacker, and May
the oldest firm in South Bend at that time, established by Andrew Anderson in
1856.
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
The two story brick building is designed in Georgian Colonial Revival style
and is finished in brick. It features balanced brick chimneys at either side,
a three bay facade with six over six double hung windows with shutters,
dentilated cornice, and a transom fan moulding with trellis -like door surround
at the main entry centrally located on the front facade. The west facade
contains a three sided bay window extension. The roof is hipped. A small
garage with a unique arched overhead door opening is connected at the east
side by a vestibule.
RECOMMENDATION
Based on the HPC Local Landmarks Criteria, the building at 130 Park Lane
has been recommended by the Landmarks Committee of the Historic Preservation
Commission as a Local Historic Landmark. The building meets the criteria in at
least two areas.
1.) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or
craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or
innovation.
2.) Its suitability for preservation.
The building fulfills criteria #1 as a finely articulated architect designed
period revival house.
The building fulfills criteria #2 by the integrity of its original
construction with only minor alterations.
DBD
3/13/96
•
