• MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING <br />of the <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />Special Monthly Meeting County Commissioner's <br />7:30 p.m. Conference Room <br />Monday February 18, 1996 7th Floor County -City <br />Building <br />I. Call to Order <br />John Oxian, president of the commission, brought the meeting to order at 7:35 <br />p.m. <br />II. Roll Call <br />Commission members present were: Richard Bullene, Catherine Hostetler, John <br />Oxian, Jerry Wiener, & J. Edward Talley. Janeanne Petrass joined the other <br />commissioners soon after commencement. <br />Commission staff present were: David Duvall, director and Aladean DeRose, <br />counsel. <br />Also attending the meeting were: Anne Bokenkamp and Howard Dukes. <br />III. Public Hearing <br />A. Certificates of Appropriateness <br />1. 1996-0130; 221 West North Shore Dr. (NSHD) - Request for approval of <br />• general exterior rehabilitation of residence. Mr. Duvall read the Staff <br />comments and circulated photographs and scope of work documentation. After <br />some discussion clarifying the particular specifications which remained <br />insufficiently defined Mr. Wiener moved for approval of the application as <br />recommended subject to review of the size and design of the skylights, <br />material and design of replacement doors, design of window infill at the rear <br />porch, and layout of the rear deck. Mr. Talley seconded the motion. The motion <br />was unanimously approved. <br />B. National Register Nomination <br />1. Studebaker Wagon Works - Carpentry Building, 637 South Lafayette. <br />Mr. Oxian informed the commission that he had met the previous Wednesday with <br />Jon Hunt of the Department of Economic Development to discuss this building <br />among other issues. Although the building is in the vicinity of one proposed <br />alternative site for the new county jail, Mr. Hunt is interested in seeing it <br />saved. Mr. Oxian suggested that anyone knowing of a not-for-profit group which <br />might have interest in this building should contact him regarding the <br />possibility of occupancy. The owner has expressed willingness to donate the <br />building for such a purpose. Mr. Oxian indicated that if progress not made on <br />this front in the near future, both this building and the Standard Surplus <br />building may possibly be threatened by jail construction. <br />Mr. Duvall read the staff report on the application which has been submitted <br />by Glory -June Greiff as part of the HPC's activities partially funded by the <br />DNR-DHPA Historic Preservation Fund. Ile also circulated the file including all <br />• required documentation and notification information, and the criteria used in <br />assessing eligibility. He further noted that no correspondence had been <br />received in response to the notifications of these proceedings. <br />Mrs. Hostetler moved that the proposal for the nomination of the Studebaker <br />Wagon Works Building 930-30A be sent to the Mayor with a recommendation for <br />its approval.
