U <br />• <br />C J <br />11 <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />APPLICATION -- 1996-0401 <br />PROPERTY -- 52407 Grape Rd. <br />South Bend, IN <br />OWNER -- Cletus Snellenburger <br />DESIGNATION -- Local Landmark <br />RATING -- Significant (S/12) <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />This Greek revival house was constructed by or for James Harris around 1843. <br />It was sold to Charles K. Pulling in 1856 who's sons served in the Civil War. <br />It was sold again in 1865 to Thomas Longley who had been one of the early <br />pioneer settlers having come to the county among the first wave of white <br />settlement in the early 1830s. After his death in 1894, the property was <br />divided among his heirs. The house was pictured in the 1875 Atlas. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />The owner proposes to construct a standard <br />garage as shown on the site plan submitted <br />gable wall facing the street. An alternative material may be allowed if it duplicates the <br />original. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The proposed garage is discretely located behind the house and between the <br />house and barn. The garage does not materially affect the existing <br />structures. Though the design could be more sensitive to the historical <br />character of the farmstead, it does not in any way damage historical material <br />or interfere with the public appreciation of the historic buildings.
