i7INLTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING <br />of the <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />Regular monthly meeting County Commissioner's <br />7;30 p.m. Conference Room <br />Monday, August 21 1995 7th Floor County -City Bldg <br />I. Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order at 7:36 p.m. by HPC President, John Oxian <br />Presiding. <br />II. Roll Call <br />Commission members present were: Martha Choitz, Adrian Fine, Catherine <br />Hostetler, John Oxian, Joanne Sporleder, J. Edward Talley, Jerry Wiener, and <br />Father Richard Bullene (attending, but not seated due to the presence of <br />Joanne Sporleder). <br />Staff present were David Duvall, IiPC Director and Aladean DeRose, Counsel to <br />the HPC. <br />Also Present were Peter Hauser, Larry Clifford, and Marsha Stevenson. <br />III. Public Hearing <br />Public Hearing was conducted for the following Certificates of Appropriateness <br />applications. <br />1995-072£3: 1233 East Wayne Street Korth - LHD-Eid; replacement roofing. <br />David Duvall read the Staff report. President Oxian read a letter form the <br />applicant explaining their inability to attend the meeting due to being out of <br />the city. Commission members discussed the attrition of slate roofs in recent <br />years and questioned whether the use of look-alike composition material as <br />replacement was becoming and automatic response in lieu of investigation of <br />slate replacement or other more authentic replacement materials. Concerns <br />expressed included that the new shingle materials often do not replicate the <br />appearance of true late authentically and are typically not laid in the same <br />coursing, etc. 'Mrs. Sporleder recalled the case of Neighborhood Housing <br />Services at the former Notre Dame Av, Firehouse which recently found in <br />economically feasible to replace with real slate. Mr. Duvall stated that he <br />was unaware whether the applicants had received bids for slate replacement. <br />Mr. Oxian suggested that the application be tabled and that the applicant be <br />asked to provide such comparative bid data. Mr. Talley moved that the <br />application be so tabled. Mrs. Choitz seconded the motion. The motion was <br />unanimously approved. Mr. Fine indicated that he would provide information <br />from HLFI regarding supply sources for used or salvaged slate. <br />1995-0731: 221 East Navarre Street - LHD-RB; landscaping & privacy fence. <br />Mr. Duvall read the Staff Report noting that the applicant, Mr. Hauser was <br />present. Mr. Iiauser provided additional information in the form of additional <br />plan sheets and a memo further specifying fence and pavement surface material. <br />Mr. Talley noted that Mr. Hauser had already committed considerable effort to <br />rehabilitation of the house and that he was providing and excellent example to <br />the neighborhood in appropriate restoration practices. President Oxian•asked <br />whether mature trees were existent on the property or were proposed for <br />removal as part of the landscaping proposal. Mr. Hauser indicated that there <br />were no mature trees present except for those shared with neighbors on the <br />property line and those on the tree lawn which would be unaffected by the <br />plans. Catherine Hostetler moved for approval of the application. Jerry Wiener <br />seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Oxian commented that <br />the commission should be aware that the approved landscaping would probably <br />page 1 <br />
