a It % CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
The proposal includes the rebuilding of 12 luminaires by the city at the
points indicated on the map. These repairs are to be in -kind.
The lamping is to be 100 watt, 120 volt high pressure sodium lamps. This
lamping does have spectral distribution in all color ranges, although it
results in a yellow cast to all it illuminates. In June 1990, the Mayor's
Historic Streetlight Committee was polled on their preference of lamp type.
The high pressure sodium lamp was preferred over a metal halide lamp. The
Mayor's Committee recommended the high pressure sodium lamp as acceptable for
lighting on Riverside Drive.
The proposed plan calls for the replacement of 10 poles, 9 of which are
"toothpick" concrete poles of a fairly modern design, with more appropriate
Hollowspun poles. It is staff's understanding that the new poles are to be
topped by rebuilt luminaires matching the original. The one other pole in
question is a cast iron pole in front of 916 Riverside Drive, the George
Cutter House. This pole is believed to be the only original streetlight post
in Riverside Drive District. Though it will cause an inconsistency in the
streetlighting, staff recommends denial for its removal and replacement due to
it's historic value on the streetscape and it's relationship with the George
Cutter Home.
Staff recommends approval for the other aspects of the proposal including the
replacement of 9 poles, rebuilding 12 existing fixtures, installing 9 rebuilt -
fixtures, and the high pressure sodium lamping.
CAA
'x/12/95
