CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
PROPERTY -- 723 Park Avenue
South Bend, IN
OWNER -- Patti Tarbet
DESIGNATION -- CP -NRHD, LL
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE /HISTORIC CONTEXT
The Hodson House at 723 Park Avenue was constructed in 1889 for George &
Fannie Hodson. The Queen Anne style house is clad with narrow clapboard and
diamond shaped shingles. It has an extremely elaborate cross plan with a
hipped roof, gable dormers, a tower, and bay with a mansard roof wrapping
around the corner. It has had minor alterations and is rated 0/13 on the
Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Survey.
PROPOSED CHANGE
The owner proposes to remove an evergreen tree from the front yard.
STANDARDS
Group B Standards - Treatment
Treatment shall be defined as any change of surface materials that will not
alter the style or original form. Such improvements include... landscaping and
may involve a change that can potentially enhance or detract from the
character of the landmark.
RECOMMENDATION
The tree is a short needled evergreen planted approximately 40 -50 years ago at
the northeast corner of the house. The trunk is very close to the house (4ft)
and as a result the tree has grown angling away from the house. According to
Barncord Landscape Design, the tree has a 8 -10 year life expectancy because of
its inappropriate planting site.
Staff recommends approval for the removal of the tree and notes if replacement
is desired, an ornamental tree planted behind the corner of the house with
some low bushes at the corner would be appropriate.
CAA
4/1/95
