•
1093 Riverside Drive
South Bend, IN 46616
December 2, 1993
Chip Frederick
Historic Preservation Commission
1123 County -City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Chip,
Enclosed is an Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the
replacement of my garage doors.
Security is the motivating factor in this request. We park our cars on
the street in front of our house, and they have been vandalized repeatedly.
We no longer bother to replace the tape deck in my husband's car. I have had
my car's rear window smashed and the driver's door shot with BBs.
Our garage is hardly a secure haven in its present state, however. It
has been broken into on numerous occasions, although nothing has ever been
taken since we store nothing of value there. Despite our best efforts to
secure the doors from within, we have not been able to deter would-be thieves
from finding ways to open them.
toI wish to replace the original doors with a modern model that can be
opened from within my automobile. I frequently get home after dark, and would
not feel safe getting out of my car in the alley. I know of an armed robbery,
a purse -snatching, and a rape within a block of our house.
The looks of the replacement door are, frankly, of little concern to me,
and if the Historic Preservation Commission prefers a certain model or
material I would be glad to be advised on this point. We are willing to keep
the old garage doors and store them in either the basement or the garage.
I am asking to replace two door openings with a single large one because
of the difficulty of maneuvering a car into the garage at present. The
structure is set close to the alley and requires a tight turn. We have
attempted it on only one side of the garage, and that opening was narrow
enough that we scraped the side of our car. The other door, which we never
have tried to use, is six inches narrower.
Thank you for considering this request.
VY\ aA C-1
Marsha Stevenson
