CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />• PROPERTY -- 1093 Riverside Drive <br />South Bend, IN 46616 <br />OWNER -- Marsha Stevenson <br />DESIGNATION -- Riverside Drive Local Historic District <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />The house at 1093 Riverside Drive is an American Foursquare that was rated S/12 <br />on the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory in 1987. The house was <br />built c. 1905 and is an excellent example of American vernacular architecture. <br />The facades are of wood shingle, stucco and wide clapboard. The roof is a shallow <br />hip roof with wide enclosed eaves and a shallow hip dormer. The front porch is <br />enclosed. The windows are single pane, clustered in pairs. At the time of the survey <br />the house was in excellent condition and unaltered. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />The owner proposes the removal of the existing pair of garage doors and the center <br />post separating them. In their place a double width overhead automatic door would <br />be installed. Routine repair of the concrete garage apron is also scheduled. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Standards state: C1 <br />beyond repair, replaced <br />C3 "Original ... doors <br />and reused in place." <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />"Original ... doors ... shall be retained or when deteriorated <br />with units and trim resembling the original." <br />and hardware shall not be discarded when they can be restored <br />The HPC staff opposes this proposal <br />understandable the proposed change <br />disrepair is restorable. <br />C.
