Staff then recommended to the owners that they install a picket fence at
the western edge of the proposed area that can be most easily seen from
both Marine Street and Lincolnway East. The owners again felt that this
type of fencing would be too expensive.
In.light of staff recommendations, the owners offered an alternative: the
owners propose to erect one of two types of Schuell-brand fences,
constructed of chain-link and wood (see attached examples, "San Lido" and
"San Fernando") along the western edge of the property that is parallel to
Marine Street; the remainder of the fence would be plain chain-link. (The
owners of 1154 LWE, immediately to the west, were given a COA in September,
1989 for a Schuell-brand, "San Fernando -style" fence.)
Staff recognizes that 1. this fence is not a permanent change to the
property_; 2. historic fencing will not be removed; 3. District standards do
not specifically prohibit such a fence from being installed, and; 4. at
least one similar fence has been approved in the District in the past.
It is recommended that the HPC again encourage the owners to install an
historically appropriate fence, or install appropriate fencing along the
western edge of the property. If they remain opposed, it is recommended
that the HPC approve the proposal for the above four reasons.
F. Holycross
10-14-92
K
