Mr. Pastor distributed photos of the house and
described it as a c. 1909 Prairie -style house,
rated 0-13 and designed by architect Ernest
Young.
He said that the owner, Mr. Brian Crumlish,
proposed to replace the cedar shingle roofing on
the garage with Timberland brand asphalt
shingles, simulated cedar shingle profile. Mr.
Crumlish had provided samples of both the
existing and the proposed shingles.
Mr. Pastor said that, while the proposal wasn't
strictly within standards, there were mitigating
factors. Mr. Crumlish had put the cedar shingles
on himself, in 1977, to replace asphalt roll
shingles on both house and garage. He had hoped
to restore the roof's authenticity. The cedar
shingles on the garage had since deteriorated,
and were manifesting several other performance
problem --for example, raccoons were eating them.
Nevertheless, Mr. Pastor continued, some
authenticity would be lost in the switch from
cedar to Timberline shingles. He therefore
recommended searching for a roofing material that
more closely resembled wood shingles. He asked
the Commission to suggest such alternatives.
Mrs. Sporleder questioned Mr. Crumlish on the
particulars of the project. Mr. Crumlish told
her
--the cedar shingles posed problems partly
because of tree shading and moisture, partly
because of raccoon attacks
--he intended to remove the shingles, not simply
cover them over
--the cedar shingles on the main house roof were
also presenting problems.
Mr. Herendeen asked Mr. Crumlish whether he
planned to use Timberline Ultra shingles, or some
other Timberline shingle. Mr. Crumlish held up a
panel displaying samples of Timberline shingles,
and pointed to the one he intended to use.
Mrs. Sporleder moved to approve the proposal.
savinq she felt the Timberline shingles would
give the roof an appropriate "rough" look. Mr.
Herendeen seconded the motion. Mr. Oxian
abstained. Motion approved.
6. Entry Posts --East Wayne Local Historic District
Mr. Holycross presented the staff report. The
project, originating from the East Wayne Liaison
Committee, was to replace the missing lanterns
atop the entry posts to the neighborhood. A
meter box was to be attached to the northeast
post, in an inconspicuous spot. The chosen
replacement lamps closely resembled the
originals, as shown in an old postcard of the
district.
Mr. Holycross recommended approval of the
project, stipulating that the meter -box be
painted to match the bricks.
Mr. Oxian asked Mrs. Shaw to specify the type
0
