<br />Peter Cripe came with his parents to this county and spent a
<br />significant part of his life in first German and later Clay
<br />Township. He received most of his education in subscription
<br />schools. When his father died in 1849 Peter Cripe came to assume
<br />paternal duties on his family's behalf. He lived on the old
<br />homestead until 1855, when he took up residence on his own farm,
<br />which consisted of 123 acres. On Jan 14, 1855 he married Tilistia
<br />Skiles, who was born May 5, 1836. Peter and Tilistia Cripe had
<br />nine children: Sarah J., Fannie, John, Edward, David, Jacob,
<br />Evaline, Elsie and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Cripe were members of the
<br />German Baptist Church. Peter Cripe, although not strictly
<br />"partisan" was a Republican in politics.[24]
<br />Also buried in Ullery cemetery from his immediate family are
<br />Peter's wife, Tilistia A., who died May 19, 1910 and their
<br />daughters, Eva, who died Sept. 18, 1894, and Mamie A., who died
<br />December 29, 1896.
<br />John Cripe, one of the sons of Peter Cripe, was also interred in
<br />Ullery cemetery. John was born April 23, 1860, in St. Joseph
<br />County and spent his entire life in this vicinity. He was married
<br />October 9, 1884 in Dayton, Michigan to Miss Emma Strunk. They had
<br />five sons: Clarence, Clifford, Blaine and Richard of Roseland,
<br />and Donald of the United States Navy, stationed in China in 1932.
<br />His other son, Blaine Cripe, served as St. Joseph County Deputy
<br />Sheriff. John Cripe was a member of Fidelity Camp no. 28, Woodmen
<br />of the World.[25]
<br />Emma A. Cripe, wife of John W. Cripe, was also buried here. She
<br />was born in South Bend on February 23, 1868. Mrs. Emma Cripe was
<br />a member of the Roseland Woman's Club, the Gold Star Mothers and
<br />the Community Congregational Church.[26]
<br />Rev. David S. Cripe, another son of Peter Cripe and brother of
<br />John and Jacob Cripe, was also interred in Ullery cemetery. He
<br />was born in Roseland, September 18, 1864 and lived in this area
<br />all his life. In 1899 he was married to Anna E. Shirk Cripe by
<br />Elder David Miller of the Brethren (Dunkard) Church. David S.
<br />Cripe served as pastor at the church from 1900-1922.[27]
<br />Mrs. Anna E. Cripe, wife of David Cripe, was born on November 27,
<br />1863 in Lancaster Pa. Mrs. Cripe lived in Clay Township for 52
<br />years. She came to South Bend from Noble County, Indiana in 1886.
<br />She and David S. Cripe had a son, Paul Cripe. Upon her demise she
<br />was buried in the Ullery cemetery.[28]
<br />Jacob U. Cripe, another son of Peter Cripe, was also interred
<br />here. Jacob Cripe was born in Clay Township on April 4, 1867 and
<br />lived here his entire. He was married in 1895 to Lillie F. Abele.
<br />He retired as a carpenter and building contractor and prior to
<br />1950 was, for ten years, St. Joseph County Circuit Court Jury
