methodical, step-by-step manner, if it is practical.
The continued use, or readaptive use, of early twentieth-century
schools is not only a local issue. Communities around the country
are trying to come to terms with the issue of whether to maintain
these structures for current needs or to replace them. Many
people, including most preservationists, are convinced that these
buildings should be saved and either continued to be used as
educational facilities or readapted to other uses. Locally, the
HPC has already placed two such buildings under its protection --
Central High School and Oliver School. Unfortunately, both of
these Local Landmarks today sit empty and provide examples of
the problems inherent in their reuse.
