Madison and Taylor Streets. This area, part of the northwest side
of the original town as mentioned above, consists of twenty-nine
structures; 550 of them are rated as contributing on the Survey.
In addition, they consist of: two designated landmarks; several
of the oldest frame houses left in the city, a fine collection of
nineteenth-century workers cottages; and later examples of the
neighborhood's architectural transformation over time.
If the owners of these buildings supported the idea of
districting, this area might make an excellent small district
preserving one of South Bend's older neighborhoods.
As for the area north of Marion Street, the staff has identified
a collection of buildings (see map, #2) on Cushing Street that
could serve as a small district representing this portion of the
city. This area contains 23 residences consisting of a
contributing structure density of 650. The remaining structures
on this block, with restoration or the removal of ahistorical
materials, could also contribute to the historic fabric of the
neighborhood. As with the previous proposal, if the owners
desired designation, this collection of structures would more
readily fall within the criteria necessary for historic district
designation.
Fred M.
