Historic Landmarks <br />a. Rohrer Cemetery --Second Reading. <br />Commission members applauded -the report <br />prepared by Mr. Holycross. Mrs. Sporleder <br />moved to send the report with a favorable <br />recommendation for landmark status to the <br />Common Council; Mrs. Petrass seconded; <br />motion approved. <br />b. 629 W. LaSalle --First Reading. <br />Mr. Pastor described the property as an <br />1870 Italianate house situated within <br />the proposed extension of the West <br />Washington Historic District. Mr. Oxian <br />noted that W. LaSalle is now almost totally <br />taken up by landmarks and that it would <br />have been easier to have declared the area <br />a historic district in the first place. <br />C. Southern Hotel --First reading. Mr. Oxian <br />read a letter from the owner, Mr. Weaver, <br />requesting landmark status (see appendix <br />a). Mr. Weaver was present to provide <br />support and documentation for his claims <br />that the hotel is a) endangered and <br />b) of interest to developers, notably <br />the Hope Rescue Mission. <br />Mr. Oxian suggested moving straight to a <br />second reading on this matter. Mr. <br />Herendeen so moved; Choitz seconded. <br />d. Southern Hotel --Second reading. Mrs. <br />Petrass moved send the Council a favorable <br />recommendation for landmark status: Mrs. <br />Dennen seconded. <br />e. Colfax Theatre. Mrs. Choitz reported that <br />asbestos removal was now underway at the <br />theatre, and demolition would begin in <br />about two weeks. She said she had toured <br />the interior and found a few salvageable <br />items, notably some c. 1925 seats. Removal <br />of these items, however, would be difficult <br />and dangerous. <br />f.
