Sitting right in front of us is the possibility of a lively
area of housing in some of the buildings, such as the
Transwestern building.
The funds that the city has available for demolition should
be offered for rehabilitation.
Avanti Buildina
Recommendation: This building should be allowed to be
demolished because most of it is in extremely poor
condition, and because it stands in the center of the
largest potentially developed open area in the corridor.
The area where Avanti operated should be cleared of the
older of those connected buildings; the newer should be
rehabbed and offered for sale.
The front part (new area) of the Avanti building should be
marketed for light industry, including the first older
addition for a warehouse. Eliminate the second and third
parts of the structure.
Standard Surplus
Recommendation: The building should be saved, but the
exterior is in desperate need of restoration. Redevelopment
should assist the owner in obtaining grants, loans or
abatements to help finance repairs.
This is a visually important building because of its height,
its isolated position, and because the long axis of the
building -is perpendicular to Sample St. It can be seen from
a great distance from either direction along Sample.
While the building's exterior has a simple architectural
strength, it is blighted because of the broken windows,
discolored brick walls, and neglected grounds.
The building on Sample St. now housing old Studebaker parts,
should be required to overhaul the building or move
elsewhere.
Transfer Standard Surplus to the Shetland building, building
No. 69, or the Transwestern Building. Require Standard
Surplus to either restore and maintain their building, or
move with money they will earn with the sale of the Avanti
property.
Carpentry Shop
