Mr. David Fritz, owner, responded to Mrs. Sporleder's
question regarding the purpose of this alteration.
That room is an unfinished expansion attic. They would
like to convert it to a master bedroom with a
half -bath. They need the new windows for ventillation.
As they are now, the windows are too low for practical
use. Mr. Fritz went on to explain the details of the
project as explained above.
Mrs. Sporleder called for a motion to accept the
project as proposed. Mrs. Petrass moved to accept the
staff recommendation. Mr. Herendeen seconded. Mr. Eide
asked the dimentions of the new windows to be certain
that they are large enough for escape as per building
code. Motion approved.
B. Central High School (moved from IV.D.S(b) of the agenda)
Mr. Ron Radecki spoke in favor of the proposed plans of the
South Bend Community School Corporation to convert Central
High School to their administrative offices. Mr. Radecki
stated that the school board has not received much vocal
support from entities such as the City or the HPC. He then
introduced Mrs. Leiffler who discussed the many benefits of
the adaptive use of the structure.
Mrs. Sporleder then asked what Mr. Radecki and Mrs. Leiffler
needed from the HPC. A resolution of support to the school
board from the Commission was requested. Mr. Radecki
announced a school board meeting on Monday, January 22 at
3:30 and requested the presence of Commission members at
that meeting. The school board will decide whether or not
to continue with the procedure to gain approval for the bond
issue.
Mrs. Sporleder stated that the Commission had been more than
accommodating in its approval of various aspects of the
renovation proposal. Yet the HPC has been accused of
causing a greater amount of expense for the project. The
Commission wishes to have their role clarified and to have
the school board recognize the fact that the HPC has
compromised on nearly every aspect of the project.
Mr. Eide moved that the Commission compose a letter of
support to the South Bend Community School Board advocating
that they go ahead with their plans to renovate Central High
School. The letter would need to be at the school
administrative offices by Wednesday morning. Mrs. Petrass
seconded; Motion approved.
January 15, 1990 PAGE 3
