Page 3 June 15, 1981
Staff Report
Mr. Stamper reported that the Commission has hired a new planner to start
July 20, Karen Kiemnec, who recently graduated with a Masters Degree in
Preservation Planning from the University of Vermont. She will work with
Mr. Stamper until his departure at the end of September.
7. Old Business
Policy on Abandoned Buildings
Mr. Oxian asked that the Commission give him their comments on abandoned
buildings within the next two weeks.
Twyckenham Bridge
Mr. Stamper reported that Mr. Richardson, County Engineer, gave him the
current estimates on the Twyckenham Bridge. Estimates for the railing
(805 Lineal feet) are as follows:
1_. a) Concrete railing with open arches $100/lin. ft.
b) Concrete railing with enclosed recessed panels $80/lin ft.
c) Three rail aluminum railing $61/lin ft.
11_. Replacement of the small arches under the deck would require 18 cubic
yards at a cost of $3,000/cubic yard for a total of $54,000.
• Mr. Oxian moved that since the cost for restoring original features of the
bridge is minimal, a letter should be written to the County Commissioners
recommending rebuilding the open balastrade. The motion was seconded by
Mrs. Sherk and was carried.
Mr. Hayes moved that a second letter be sent to the County and City Engineers
to recommend that they take better care of the City's bridges, particularly
by stopping the use of salt in the winter. The motion was seconded by Mr.
Wasielewski and it carried.
Plaques for Historic Landmarks
Mr. Stamper read the proposed staff policy for selling plaques to histori4
landmark owners. Money earned would be used to buy new ones (See Appendix D).
The issue of whether the mayor's name would appear on future plaques will be
the option of the buyers. Mr. Oxian moved that the staff policy be adopted
with the addition that the owner will have the option of including the mayor's
name. Mr. Wasielewski seconded the motion and it passed.
8. New Business
No Report
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30.
