Ox:ian
Vice -President
Iiist:oric Pre-;ervat ion Commission
Room 411.23
County -City Building
South Rend, Indiana 46601
Dear Mr. Oxian:
In .response to your letter dated November 9, 1979, we thank you
for your interest in the Bendix Estate. How -ver, we must decline
your request to have the 1.07 Green lawn ,\venue property an his-
toric landmark.
I think a little background information may be helpful. The
property commonly known as the Bendix Estate, includes three
separate and distinct structures. The first and certainly
the most. interesting, is the old estate itself. It was com-
pleted in 1910 and is basically in first rate condition on the
interior. The second building completed in 1959 was the ad-
jacent chane] and recreation area, and the third building is
the classroom and dormitory section completed in 1.962.
Since most of your standards appear to deal with the exterior
treatment of the buildings in question, I think it is important
to point out that the exterior of the old estate, as well as
the new buildings were added in 1862. That is, the original
exterior of the estate itself was completely changed at that
time. Its original finish was a light brown stucco, with a
minimum of limestone trim. This was changed in 1962 to a
blonde brick, completely surrounding the facility and changing
its look considerably. This was added by the nuns that cur-
rently own the property. Therefore, the current look of the
building is less than twenty years old.
