June 18, 1979
Page 2
A letter was received from the Park Avenue Neighborhood Association
asking for information on the next Commission meeting so that a re-
presentative can be present express/ng PANA's views on the planned
expansion of nearby medical facilities.
A memo from the Board of County Commissioners was received spelling
out the regulations governing business travel expenses to conferences
and conventions. All such travel must have prior approval,
679 6^ Committee Reports
.
City Survey
Mrs. Price informed the Commission that she and john Oxlan talked
about scheduling a caucus meeting in July with the Consultants to
identify districts. Mr. Stamper felt that by July 16' Mr. Crum7ish
should have all his district rmcommdations mode, and then the Com-
mission could meet with the city and make final recommendations as far
as boundaries for potential districts are concerned. Mrs. Price then
said final approval for the total survey would b' given in July and
the material for the state should be ready at the end of August,
Mr, Wasielewski then asked permission to suspend the agenda to hear
the comments of the group present from the Park Avenue Neighborhood
Association. There were no objections.
Mr. James Conley spoke for the group a"Jvoloed its concern on what's
going on on Lafayette between Navarre and Marlon concerning the
mod/cal foundation expansion. Mr. Wasie}ewski noted that the survey
highlights these areas and they should be protected in the future.
He then explained thoscupe of the City Survey and said the only way areas
can be protected is through ordinance either as landmarks or districts.
He said the Commission has some power in that area but, is, nonetheless,
quite limited. Probably the most feasible solution is to make that a
district and he mentioned that some years before that had been consid-
ered. There was some discussion on overlay zoning of a historic dis-
trict. Mr. DxYan then said that he had sent a latter in August to
Dr. Louis Gallup of the Medical Center concerning a neo-classical
house to be declared a landmark, It is owned by the Foundation and
they stated that nothing would happen to it ''in the near future."
for approximately 5 years, Regarding having it moved' there was no
response either way. Mr' Oxlan said that he spoke to Jeff Gibney
with the idea that possibly Southold Foundation would be interested
in moving the house. Mr. F. Jay Nimtz declared that Southold didn't
have any money but they would be of assistance in moving those houses,
and they do have 3 or 4 lots. Mr' Oxian felt the Mod/cal Foundation
would not consent to having this house declared a landmark. Mr. Stam-
per said the plan is to take the houses north of the neo-classical and
either move them or tear them down. Thera was more discussion from the
Park Avenue group. Mr. Conley/s concern is the encroachment of the
development in that neighborhood, Mr. Nlmtz said the opportunity to
make that area a district was there two years ago, and it was decided
~-
not to. Mr. Conley said the Association needs to ask an opinion from
the National Advisory Council. Mrs. Price said the question before the
Commission is 6mas it wish to get into the issue. It was decided that
