February 19,.1979
Page 3
passed in September 1977 declaring the Odd Fellows' Building a
local landmark.
Public Relations and Community Education
Jeanne Denham has commitments of support from the St. Joseph Valley
Architects, the Northern Indiana Chapter of the AIA, and the Archi-
tecture Department of Notre Dame for the Shambleau Project, but no
money. The Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Humanities Commission
both have matching grants programs which could be used for publishing
this paper, but the matching grants applications must be in before
March 1, 1979 (or October 1, 1979). Publication is estimated to be
$2,600 for 200 copies, and the Commission currently feels it does not
have that kind of matching funds for a project which may have limited
interest. Other suggestions for funds included asking the Chamber
of Commerce, Board of Realtors, the Northern Indiana Historical Society,
and the owners of Shambleau homes. Mr. Oxian made a motion to refer
the problem to committee, seconded by Mrs. Price, passed unanimously.
Mrs. Price said that Mr. Ziegler had made a commitment to be here
May 9th for Preservation Week. His planned appearances have not been
firmed up yet, so any suggestions will be welcome.
Mrs. Price presented a proposal of an Indiana Arts Council grant
possibility to do a brochure about the West Washington Street District,
which would explain the National Register District standards, restric-
tions, benefits, describe the area, including more than the Register
District, to begin to lay the ground work for a local district in
• this approximate area, and acquaint the people in the area with
themselves and their neighbors. A slide presentation would also be
included. Mrs. Price moved that the application be submitted with
the final figures not to exceed two thousand dollars. Mr. Nimtz
seconded it. More discussion, in which it was agreed that no boundary
lines defining or suggesting a local distric would be drawn, only the
National District boundaries could be printed. Mr. Oxian also sug-
gested that an attempt be made to acquire city money for this project,
before any county money is used. The motion was passed. Mr. Time
Eckerle abstaining.
Environmental Impact Statement
No report
Presidential Report
Jim Wicks would be interested in serving on the Commission, but has
no political affiliations. Al Stivers still needs to be contacted.
There was some discussion of what was going on with the Bendix
Estate, but no action was taken.
Staff Report
10 No report
Mrs. Price said that she and Joann Sporleder were going to the
