February 21, 1977
Page 5
when he became interested in historic preservation, his inter-
est was in organizing a local body in the county and the city
and he was pleased to be part of this group and serve as its
president. However, he feels that now it would be best for
the Commission if the officers were rotated. He then spoke of
some of the acccmplishments of the past two years and cited the
completion of the County Survey, and.the beginning of the City
Survey. He said neighborhood meetings under the auspices of
the Commission were very well attended. He mentioned that a
procedure has been established for the designation of historic
landmarks, and he mentioned the $5,000 grant from the National
Park Service that the Commission had received, and the desig-
nation of the Commission as an environmental impact clearing
house.
He did, however, feel that the Commission could acknowledge
one failure end that was that no historic district had been
established. Though perhaps this was not indeed a true failure,
for many new neighborhood organizations and groups had been es-
tablished, such as the Near Northwest Neighborhood Association,
the Park Avenue, etc. Mr. Smith stressed that he hoped co-
operation will continue between the Commission and other bodies
and organizations as the neighborhood groups, Southhold, the
Historical Society, etc. He then remarked that he would re-
commend that Mr. John Oxian be chosen as the next president of
the Commission.
7. Old Business
Ms. Deloris Davisson asked to delay the report from the nominating
committee and wished.the Commission would consider inviting Joann
Sporleder back as the architectural historian. She stressed that
Rita Kopczynski was encountering difficulty in replacing her. She
said there were a number of art historians in the area, but no
architectural historians. Ms. Davisson then made a motion for Ms.
Kopczynski to correspond with Ms. Sporleder regarding the acceptance
of this position again. Mr. Al Stivers seconded this motion and it
passed unanimously.
Mr. F. Jay Nimtz, as chairman of the Nominating Committee, then —
presented his report. The Commi.tteerecommended that the follow-
ing members be elected for the respective positions:
President: John Oxian
Vice President: Deloris Davisson
Secretary: Russell W. Rothermel
Treasurer: Ted Wasielewski
Mr. Nimtz made a motion that this report of the Nominating Com-
mittee be accepted as submitted. Mr. Catanzarite seconded this
motion and it passed unanimously.
Mr. Smith then congratulated the new officers of the Commission.
