May 11, 1976
Page 3
5. Correspondence
Ms. Gilbert read a letter that she had written to a Dr. F. A.
Turfler regarding his suggestion for a possible utilization
of the East Mill Race along the St. Joseph River. There was -
a discussion about the proper procedure for incoming and out-
going correspondence. It was decided that correspondence of
any importance should be taken up with the chairman of the
appropriate committee.
Next, a letter from Mr. Michael H. Setzer, General Manager
of Transpo was read and Mr. Smith suggested that a copy be
sent to Mr. Patrick McNamara.
6. Committee Reports
Budget and Finance
There was no report from this committee at this time.
Historic Districts
Mr. Ted Wasielewski infozmed the Commission that he
had called a meeting on Monday to take a look at the
proposed widening of Chapin Street. He mentioned that
two Commission members were present, plus two staff
members. It was suggested that he outline a letter,
incorporating ideas on this subject from Commission
members.
Historic Landmarks
Mr. Oxian reported -that the County Council had passed all
three ordinances designating landmarks. He said that
Councilwoman Velma Torzewski was very complementary and -
appreciative as to what the Historic Preservation Commis-
sion was doing. Mr. Oxian stated that the Amendment to
the Ordinance would be on the agenda of the Area Plan
Commission meeting on the 18th of.May. He also stated
that he has received 6 or 7 more letters from homeowners
desiring that their homes be declared landmarks. He spoke
about the property'at 25618 Quinn Road in North Liberty.
The owner wishes that the site be listed as an historic
landmark but also vrould like the zoning changed so that
she could use one of the houses as a comnercial enter-
prise. She wants to sell produce there and also use it
as a bakery. The owner wants to restore the original
house to its original design. Mr. Rinderle added that
the, -barn -on this property had the first automated feeding
system in the county.
Mr. Oxian made a motion that all three structures be de-
clared an historic landmark with the addition that the
Commission should support the owner in rezoning. Mr. Ted
Wasielewski seconded this motion and it passed unanimously.
