April 13, 1976
Page 2
5. Correspondence
Mrs. Gilbert reviewed the correspondence that had been received. She
mentioned. a, request from a Mr. William B. Davis, representing the City
of Crown Point for saving the Fake County Courthouse: It was suggested
by a Commission member that he contact Dr. Hermanson at Ball State.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Miller also requested information for placing
their home on the National Register. This matter was taken care of by
staff.
Next, Mrs. Gilbert referred to a verbal contact and a copy of a letter
from Patrick McNamara to Mayor Peter Nemeth regarding a suggested use
of the old Union Station. Mr. F. Jay Nintz suggested that the presi-
dent send a copy of this letter to the Public Transportation Corp.,
asking for comments. Mrs. Sporleder commented that Simon Sclambert
suggested.much of the same thing and she submitted drawings that he
had made. Ms. Kopezynski spoke about adaptive uses of railroad, sta-
tions and, in particular, Public Law 94 -210 which is a railroad.re-
vitalization and reform act. Mr. Oxian declared that the resolution
which designates the Union Station as as historic landmark should be
changed to an ordinance. Mrs. Sporleder also suggested perhaps that
the City Council make a feasibility study on this matter.
Mr. Oxian mentioned that Jeanne Derbeek 6f-the South Bend Tribune
had received a, letter from Samuel Leeper Devine in Columbus, Ohio
regarding her article on the old Leeper house. Mr. Smith, in turn,
commend.ed,Ms. Derbeck for her fine work in reporting historic pre-
servation news.
6. Committee Reports
Budget and Finance
Mr. Oxian had no report at this time.
Historic Districts
Mr. Ted Wasielewski stated.that he, Ruth Price, Joanne Sporled.er,
and Walter Rinderle had had a meeting with Mr. Rolan Ferrand and
a representative from Murphy Associates concerning the widening
of Chapin Street. The proposal is to widen it from 4+ to 52 feet.
It was stated that the right of way would have to be purchased if
an alternative solution to take 16 feet off the eastern side of the
street would have been pursued. Since the engineering group is re-
quired to file an impact statement with the U.S. Dept. of Transpor-
tation, the Historic Preservation Commission was asked to write a
letter stating its response to the widening of Chapin Street which -
will be included with the environmental impact statement. Mr. Was -
ielewski suggested that each member of the Commission read a copy
of the Environmental Impact Statement to date. A discussion ensued
and the visitors were asked their views. Mrs. Dill added that the
widening would facilitate traffic but a no parking rule would do
the same thing. Mr. Smith suggested that a meeting be held for
Commission members to view the area.
