May 12, 1975
Page 2
$8028 each, totaling $2+.78 for theCommission's approval for
payment. Mr. Rothermel ma v _ _
ed that these Iexpenses -be approved.
Mr. Stivers seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
5. Correspondence
President -Smith distributed copies 'of the Indiana: Preserva-
tionist and -brought -to the attention of -the Commission the
many references to South Bend -and Mishawaka in its pages.
He felt this was excellent exposure and publicity for the
cause of historic preservation in this area.
Ms. Schlereth reported'on a telephone conversation she had
r had with Marsha Mullin. She is - a'graduate-'student in Museum
Science and is -on the College Work'Study Program at Teras -
Tech University. She had asked about-the.possibility of work-
ing for the Commission during this summer. The'Commission
would be obliged to pay only 200 of her full:salaxy or approx-
imately $250. After some discussion -of how valuable-her're
search could be'to-the Commission, particularly to`-the-Land-'
marks' Committee doing work similar to'what Ms. _ Ryan had been --
doing, it 'was moved by Mr. Oxian that she" be qr_e' d. - Ms: Spor-
leder seconded the motion and it was- passed`unanimously`.- It'
was suggested that a contract be drawn-iip and that her salary
could be paid from contractual services.
Ms. Schlereth reported that the Mayor's office had -forwarded
a letter from the Department of the Interior;- 'informing the `-
Commission of Community Development Block Grant and 701`Plan-
ning funds which might be used for the purpose of financing a
local survey. Ms. Schlereth stated that she discussed this -
communication with Mr. Hojnacki. He stated that he -could -not -
commit any Community Development funds until d
he offi-
cial approval of the city's proposal from Washington: -He also
directed her to see Mr. George Kruse in the-MACOG office; con-
cerning 701 funds. This, -Ms. Schlereth reports._shie did,'and
Mr. Kruse stated that it was the-city's`701 Planning funds
which the communication was referring to. Under the federal
guidelines, the city has to include provisions for -historic
preservation in the use of 701 Planning --funds, and Mr.' Kruse`
stated he would inform the mayor of thiswhenhe- returned his
review of their proposal (which'did not include -any allocation
for historic preservation). Mr. Niiitz stated that he -would
take the communication from the -Department of the'Interior-with'
him and talk with the mayor about getting some funds allocated.
Ms.-Schlereth'reported that -letters, copies of'the "position
papers," and programs had been sent to Congressman Bradenias,-
Senator-.Hartke and Senator Bayh regarding'the-forthcoming
Urban Conservation meetings-. She felt that they would -b6 --
interested in seeing how thie funded 'grant -from the Indiana- -
Committee for the Humanities is being spent in the community.
