South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - April 7, 1995
The Studebaker Drivers' Club offers
$85,563 for the site, conditioned on the
purchase of both the South Bend Community
School Corp (SBCSC) education center and
the land and building known as Vandalia
Station and also conditioned on the approval
of the Studebaker Drivers' Club to be given
on July 17, 1995.
Jack Smith, owner of Design Packaging,
noted that Design Packaging began
operations in South Bend in March 1966.
They have a second plant in Peru, Indiana.
They manufacture corrugated cardboard
boxes for industry within a 60 -mile radius of
South Bend. Their product is manufactured
from recycled paper and is, itself,
recyclable. The manufacturing process
produces no toxic waste. In 1991 the
company began to look at its future space
needs and contacted the Redevelopment staff
because of the Commission's interest in
eliminating the industrial land uses in the
East Bank. Design Packaging and
Redevelopment have explored several
options since that time as possible locations
for a new Design Packaging facility. Mr.
Smith noted that Design Packaging has had
an excellent record of keeping its grounds
well groomed.
Bipin Doshi commented that Schafer Gear
Works is located across the street from the
Tianswestern site. It has gone to
considerable expense to set a high
development standard during its expansion
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
C. continued...
-10-
