He asked Ms. Kiemnec
what Historic Preservation's restrictions
would be on changing the building's
appearance. Ms. Kiemnec responded that that
is one of the unique qualities of the building.
A building that loops old, yet feels new, is
appealing to many people. It will fit very
well with the character of the East Bank
which has a mix of old and new buildings.
Ms. Kiemnec noted that Historic Landmarks
Foundation favors the restoration of the
building for residential use.
Mr. Sharp expressed his preference for
residential development on that site.
Mrs. Kolata noted that one of The Alexander
Company's projects she visited had a rooftop
garden and community space. She asked if
The Alexander Company planned to do that
on this project. They said they did not make
it part of the bid because they didn't know if
the building was structurally able to support
it. But if they found it was structurally
possible, they would include an outdoor
garden/picnic area on the roof. It was a very
nice touch, given the limited space on the site
at ground level.
Mr. Donoho noted that since this project
would require heavy subsidy by the City, he
would like to require The Alexander
Company to give the community an
opportunity to be competitive in supplying
-48-
