South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993 <br />6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.) <br />a. continued... <br />Mr. Fiasecki noted that he doesn't like the <br />work blight. But the word is mild compared <br />to living with those conditions. <br />Mr. Sharp noted that he has toured the area <br />thoroughly on two occasions and has read the <br />development plan describing deterioration and <br />blight and agrees with the descriptive term <br />"blight." He feels that we need to step in to <br />correct that blight. On the other hand he was <br />encouraged at the number of good things that <br />he saw and the opportunities available in the <br />industrial districts. We are fortunate to have <br />the mechanism available for the City to <br />become involved and improve the character of <br />both neighborhoods and industrial districts so <br />that they can prosper in the future. <br />Mr. Sharp noted that he is new on the <br />Commission and was not aware that we <br />looked at the Riley High School location as a <br />target activity in the area, feeling that is <br />outside the Commission's prerogative. <br />Mr. Hunt explained that the development plan <br />was drafted after the Riley High School <br />decision. The department feels that a major <br />public investment speaks loudly of the faith of <br />that public body that the area will turn <br />around. But if the Riley High School issue <br />had not surfaced whatsoever, it wouldn't have <br />made any difference to the overall plan. We <br />would still be recommending to the <br />Commission that they move ahead on the <br />plan. We are simply reflecting a public <br />-44- <br />
