South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
blighted area. That's not a question that
happens all the time.
MR. HUNT: There is probably
$150,000,000 in two other blighted areas, that
is the downtown and Past Bank, over the last
ten years. Private investment; counting ours.
So that it is a legal, generic issue that, at the
local level always raises some hackles in
terms of getting that designation. It has
nothing to do solely with this area, but with
every area I've ever been involved in, that
question either comes up from residents or
business people that are in those areas. "Why
do we need this designation ?"
MS. AUBURN: We've had this same
question among the Commissioners. We've
asked the same question you have on just the
term. It's just that there's some legal
requirements we have to follow.
MS. BLACKETOR: But there's also a
contradiction in public agencies.
MRS. KOLATA: I don't necessarily agree
with that. In that, certainly Redevelopment is
declaring it blighted, but Redevelopment (and
other portions of our department and the
community and the private business sector)
are going to be working to correct that blight
by expending public monies and private
monies to turn that around. So I don't
necessarily see the conflict. You had another
question as to why we did not send a copy of
the resolution and the plan to the School
-30-
