South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
that section until such time as the State Tax
Board gives their approval. Now, I can tell
you that we are mounting a major offensive.
We already have captains and lieutenants and
soldiers prepared to fight this and we're
trying to get across to the School Board that
there's absolutely no need for this. We have
a 55 acre site with a fine school on
it— Jackson —that could easily be renovated
just as they did with LaSalle School for about
$10,000,000. We don't have to float any
bond issues and, maybe some of you here are
not burdened by the taxes that are imposed
upon us, but I can tell you as a business
person, that I am burdened; and I know many
other people that are burdened. I do not
object to it if the money is used properly.
But I think, in terms of tearing down this
beautiful building.... I should finally tell you
that Mishawaka High School —and I invite all
of you to come over and look at Mishawaka
High School —a beautiful building. Built in
1927. We spent $8,500,000 making a major
addition to it. Nobody in their right mind
would think of tearing that down. You know
when Riley High School was built? 1927!
Same year. Same basic type of construction.
So, I don't want to harangue you, but I do
ask that you give some consideration to the
idea of modifying your resolution to exclude,
until such time as the State Tax Board
approves the demolition of Riley and the
building of a new building, do not give any
aid and comfort to the enemy. And that's,
indeed, what you will be doing. You'll be
flying directly in the face of what you are
-23-
