South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
demolishing these houses —you might just
pass these around so you can see what they
are —I think this doesn't make any sense at
all. Now, I have a personal letter from the
Mayor and he said the same thing at the
School Board meeting, "I do not wish to give
up the great inner -city recreation facility,
Studebaker Golf Course. I do not wish to
give up Studebaker Park." You don't give it
up; it's still right there. "I do not wish to
have any streets closed. I do not wish to
have any residential structures acquired. "
Now the Mayor is on record with a personal
letter to me and several others. He's also on
record at the School Board as saying the same
thing.
The plans of the School Corporation to
acquire up to, at this time, 55 sound
residential structures for the expansion of
Riley High School is absolutely counter
productive. And flies absolutely in the face
of what you say in your plan you will do.
You do not conserve and upgrade by coming
in to it and tearing out absolutely the heart of
it -55 houses right in the middle of it. And
you can see what those houses look like.
They are decent houses. It just doesn't make
any sense. We tore down last year in South
Bend through Code Enforcement over 50
houses. We're probably going to continue to
keep that pace. Now, to double that pace, by
acquiring another 55 houses when it's
absolutely unnecessary, I think is not right.
-21-
