South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
Turning again to your plans for the Southeast
Neighborhood, a sub -area goal, study on page
24 of the general development plan. It
suggested that the area between Sample,
Broadway, High and Michigan Streets would
be cleared for the new Indiana Vocational and
Technical College and a new Parkview
Juvenile and Justice Center, as well as the
relocation of existing park and expanded Boys
and Girls Club, with the balance of the area
being used for light industrial purposes. This
certainly is a sound plan and I have shown on
the attached map that the area in blue would
be cleared. That makes sense. I know the
area like the back of my hand and you should
certainly do that.
The area on the map shown in green, between
Broadway and Dubail is where I concentrated
most of my efforts earlier. I have about 20
houses, which I rehabilitated earlier and
subsequently turned over to the Housing
Development Corporation. All those houses
are still standing in the area. This would
require some spot clearance and intensive
rehabilitation.
The final area, shown in yellow, between
Dubail and Ewing Streets, which is the area
containing the best residential structures in the
entire neighborhood, is to be conserved. You
do not conserve the neighborhood by tearing
the guts out of it. These are pictures taken of
some of the houses in that particular area. I
hope that you've all been through that area,
because to acquiesce to the idea of
-20-
