South Bend
Regular Meg
elopment Commission
- December 8, 1989
6. NEW BUSINESS (cont.)
a. cominuea... .
DearjMrs. Kolata:
I read with interest the South Bend
"Tribune" article by Margaret Fosmoe,
"Statue Debate Gets an Encore," (December
3, 1989). I followed the controversy in
1982-83 regarding the placement of
"Violin Woman" on top of the Morris Civic
Auditorium fountain, and agreed whole
hear edly with the position that the
fountain should not have been altered by
the statue's placement. I have regretted
to o serve both the statue's and the
foun ain's deterioration over the last
six ears.
Both the fountain, as it was originally
designed, and the sculpture are
outstandingly beautiful works of art
whici grace the city. They both give
plea ure to our citizens. However their
juxt position does not serve either
well Obviously, "Violin Woman" is not
mean to be a water nymph.
I en ourage the Commission, during its
disc ssions about the redesign of the
Auditorium Plaza, to seriously consider
movi g the statute from on top of the
fountain to another more suitable and
noti eable place, and then to repair and
rest re the fountain to its former
maje tic glory.
Foun ains are splendid solace to a tired
and ieary citizenry and are well worth
the xpense. I am sorry to have seen so
many of our civic fountains built in the
Last twenty years reduced to the state of
disr pair they are now in. I recall the
beau iful lines of Horace in his ode on
the lountain at Bandusia,
0
ti
0 1
9
:ons Bandusiae, splendidior vitro...
i frigus amabile.
iandusia, spring more glittering than
ass ... a gift of cool pleasure.
-5-
